Overview
The Empire of Japan was an empire in the Asia-Pacific region that existed for 79 years, from the Meiji Restoration on January 3, 1868, until the Constitution of Japan took effect on May 3, 1947. During this period, Japan underwent rapid industrialization and militarization, emerging as a great power after conflicts such as the First Sino-Japanese War and World War I. Economic and political turmoil in the 1920s led to the rise of militarism and nationalism, resulting in Japan joining the Axis alliance in World War II and conquering a large part of the Asia-Pacific. Its territory included the Japanese archipelago, Korea, and Taiwan, among other areas.
