Overview
The First Mexican Republic, also known as the First Federal Republic, was a federal republic in Central America that existed from 1824 to 1835. Proclaimed on November 1, 1823, it was formally established on October 4, 1824, with the enactment of the Constitution of 1824, which designated it the United Mexican States. The republic faced significant financial and political instability throughout its twelve-year existence, with frequent military coups. It ended on October 23, 1835, when conservatives under Antonio López de Santa Anna repealed the Constitution of 1824 and transformed it into a unitary state, the Centralist Republic of Mexico.
