Overview
The First Toungoo Empire, also known as the Second Burmese Empire or Taungoo dynasty, was a dominant 16th-century Southeast Asian kingdom. Founded around October 16, 1510, it grew from a minor vassal state of Ava. Under Tabinshwehti and his successor Bayinnaung, it expanded to become the largest empire in Southeast Asian history, exercising suzerainty from Manipur to the Cambodian marches and from Arakan to Yunnan. Its capital was Toungoo until 1539, then Pegu. Despite its military success, the empire, held together by patron-client relationships, declined rapidly after Bayinnaung's death in 1581 and dissolved around December 19, 1599.
