Overview
The Free City of Frankfurt was a historical city-state, today part of Germany, founded in 1372 CE. It was a major city of the Holy Roman Empire, serving as the seat of imperial elections since 885 and as the site of imperial coronations from 1562 until 1792. Declared an Imperial Free City in 1372, it held the status of Imperial immediacy, directly subordinate to the Holy Roman Emperor. After falling under Napoleon I's rule and becoming the Principality of Frankfurt, then the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt, it was restored to its pre-Napoleonic constitution in 1815, becoming a sovereign city-state and member of the German Confederation. The Free City of Frankfurt was dissolved on October 8, 1866.
