Overview
Free France was a resistance government and government-in-exile led by General Charles de Gaulle during World War II, established in London in June 1940 after the Fall of France to Nazi Germany. Claiming to be the legitimate government of France following the dissolution of the Third Republic, it joined the Allied nations in fighting Axis forces with the Free French Forces. Free France supported the resistance in Nazi-occupied France and gained strategic footholds in several French colonies in Africa. It opposed Marshal Philippe Pétain's efforts to negotiate an armistice and establish Vichy France.
