Overview
The French First Republic was a republic that governed France from September 21, 1792, until May 18, 1804. Founded during the French Revolution, it is also known as Revolutionary France. The deputies of the Convention unanimously abolished the constitutional monarchy on September 21, 1792, and the Republic was declared "one and indivisible" on September 25, 1792. This period saw the downfall of the French monarchy, the establishment of the National Convention, the Reign of Terror, the Thermidorian Reaction, the founding of the Directory, and the creation of the Consulate, leading to Napoleon Bonaparte's rise to power and the declaration of the First Empire.
