Overview
The Principality, and later Kingdom, of Galicia–Volhynia, also known as the Kingdom of Ruthenia or Rus', was a medieval state in Eastern Europe that existed from 1199 to 1349. It was one of the three most important powers to emerge from the collapse of Kievan Rus', alongside Novgorod and Vladimir-Suzdal. Roman the Great united the principalities of Galicia and Volhynia around the turn of the 13th century. Following the Mongol invasion of Kievan Rus' in 1239–1241, Prince Daniel of Galicia pledged allegiance to Batu Khan of the Golden Horde in 1246. Daniel was crowned King of Ruthenia by the Pope in 1253, but efforts to free Ruthenia from the Golden Horde's influence ultimately failed. The kingdom was absorbed by Catholic Poland after its conquest in 1349.
